School Update

The kids have finished up their first week of school. Both kids are in new schools this year, which meant a new routine. Everything is going quite well. Justin is on FIRE for school this year, and Tristan is learning to play the viola in his Orchestra elective. Since he already knows how to play guitar, I'm hoping that picking up a new instrument should come easier than if he had no prior musical exposure. I love the fantasic opportunities they provide in middle school. He's pretty stoked about learning to play classical music, and to be a more rounded musician. Speaking of which, here is a picture of Tristan jamming this morning.

Chin Bo - Our New Pet

Tristan has been studying up on bearded dragons for several months, and I bought one for him this past Monday.

I was surprised to see how observant and engaged this little reptile is. He watches my vacuum, and he runs up to the front of the tank and watches anything that you are doing with great interest. He's quite amusing.

First Day of School!

There's lots to blog about these days but I haven't got onto the computer much in the last week!

Today, Tristan and Justin started their first day of school. We got up nice and early today, the kids had showers, we had breakfast together, and then we did our daily devotion and prayed before leaving. Despite it being the first day, and all of the traffic, we were on time! Going through two car pool lanes in the morning wasn't bad at all, since they have it down to a science.

Today's devotion was taken from Luke:25-30 and was about not letting your peers push you into obeying them, instead of God. It was a pretty timely devotion given Tristan is starting middle school today. I can hardly believe it!

I met both of their teachers yesterday and from first impressions, I was pleased. I plan to work closely with both of them this year to ensure the boys have a good year! It's a new school for both boys since I recently moved, but they are both excellent schools. I was very anxious about Tristan going to middle school but God has given me tremendous peace today.

Weird News

I know the body mix up was supposed to be the shocking news, but I was more stunned by the comment about his grandchildren. I had to go back and read it again, to make sure I read it right the first time.

Aunt June

My Aunt June passed away yesterday. She was 83. She technically wasn't my aunt, but that's all I've ever called her. Her husband, Al Spear, is my Grandpa Spear's first cousin. Very sad. She was in good health based on a doctor visit last week, but she went and sat alone by the pool in 85 degree weather and the heat got to her. I'm sad for Uncle Al. My mom and dad said he's a wreck. My cousin Gail has an apartment on the first floor of her house for her parents, so at least he isn't alone.

On a happier note, tomorrow is my Grandma Spear's 94 birthday. Well, I don't know if she's happy to be 94, but I'm happy to still have a living Grandma. :)

I Need Flashcards

I've been deeply steeped in my Spanish language adventure and I've decided that I need some verb flashcards. I recall seeing some flashcards at Borders, so I'm going to swing by there today and pick some up!

Diversity or Homogeneity?

Rules, rather, good rules, are important. I know this. Particularly for children who are learning to navigate their way in an often challenging world.

I received the list of rules and conduct in the mail for my son's new school. As I was reading it, it really struck me how schools strive to promote homogeneity among the student population. Some of the rules seem somewhat arbitrary to me. They claim that vast differences in things like clothing and hairstyles negatively affect student morale. That's interesting--and doubtful.

I was really surprised to read some of the rules. One rule, in particular, expressly indicates that students cannot dye their hair colors outside of what is deemed "natural" (blonde, various shades of brown, natural red, etc.). Blue, bright red, etc., is expressly forbidden and the child will be sent home. Now, I would be perfectly happy if my children did not want to dye their hair red, but I find it very interesting, and somewhat communist, that the school dictates if this is permissible for my child, rather than me.

We have an initiative at work called Diversity and Inclusion, which is becoming a standard in many corporate environments. The bottom line is to encourage associates to embrace differences among other associates so that we can work more effectively together and increase our productivity. This is driven largely by the increasingly multicultural landscape in the corporate world. It's very interesting that the policies of the school system breed mentalities of homogeneity, and then the children enter the real world and are expected to embrace diversity.

Hair Cut Today!

What was I thinking booking a haircut at 8AM on Saturday. *Yawn*. I stayed up too late last night chatting with the BF.

In the end it's worth it, because Medi's hair cuts give me wash and go hair his cuts are so good!

I'm sitting here listening to my brother's latest single. I'm digging it.
