Mothering as a Spectator Sport
First and foremost, Happy Mother's Day to my mom!
This article is interesting, and it's written by the woman who allowed her son to ride the subway home last year, alone. It caused an uproar in the media. I agree with her that helicopter parents are actually the greater danger to kids. In this society, when you try to do things to encourage independence in your children, you are always under the watchful eye and judgment of other mothers, evaluating your wisdom and competency. This is not a woman who is irresponsible and doesn't love her child. Quite the opposite.
